And the Drama Queen Award Goes To?

Really? Drama Queens in the world of wildlife photography?

You have got to be kidding! Walking through Kathryn Albertson Park in downtown Boise, I would think that I had just left the set of As The World Turns in Hollywood. You talk about drama!

The Canada Geese are nature’s Drama Queens. Rarely have I experienced peace and quietude in their midst…especially in mating season. Fights, honking, wings flapping and thrashing around are the norm. It seems to be non-stop chaos!

Canada Geese typically mate in their second or third year of adult life. Most times the Geese will mate for life. If one dies, the other will mate again. Canada Geese often live to be as old as 24 years. Long life and big families…now you know why there is so much goose poop in the parks!

What I find really fascinating is how Canada Geese help each other out after their goslings are hatched. It is not uncommon to see a Goose family adopt the goslings and give the parents a break for a bit. They may trade off in their duties, but sometimes this is a territorial matter. The Gander may chase the other pair off and simply adopt the goslings. The goslings are perfectly happy with their new parents.

Like I said…Drama Queens!

If you like drama…you no longer need to dial up the latest reality show on TV. Just go to the nearest park that has fresh water ponds and you will likely get your fill of drama.

Who knows, you might just become fascinated with the world of birding!
